Motives for being on this forum.

Why do you post on this forum?

There are a number of motives I have come up with in my experience with all kinds of forums.

1. A genuine desire for understanding to learn from others.
2. A genuine desire to change peoples minds.
3. A genuine desire to prove others wrong.
4. A genuine desire to see what others think.
5. A genuine desire to be a pain.

I am sure there are more.

Which one are you? Why do you post on forums? Do you have different motives on different forums? I think it would be good for all of us to think about why we participate in a forum, and what kind of message we portray to others by what we say and how we respond.

Mainly 4. Maybe a little bit of 2 but I'm well aware that I'm wasting my time.

Plus I happen to find religion and religious belief bloody interesting.

Come on d4 there has to be at least a little #5. When I post on the Atheist/Agnostic forum it's pretty much #5 although the "genuine" part may not be accurate. On the Philosophy forum it's #4 and #6 a desire to test my own debating ability. Not so much to prove others wrong as to find out what I actually think about certain things.

On the Jesus or Apologetics forums it is social contact #7 (strange how that is usually a failure unless there are Atheists posting)

I certainly like to challenge religious views but I don't think that's the same as being a pain, is it? Yes, there are some who get my back up and to whom I am less than kind, but the majority I have a lot of time for.

One thing I'll give you d4 and the other Atheists that post on SU; you have thrown off every kind of religion. That makes you about 60% nearer to God that most who profess God. A secret though, if you strip off all religion and look for a man who most characterizes who God should be I still think you will come up with Jesus.

That's only because Jesus is the most man-like god! Man created god and all that. :P

One of the main reasons I post on this forum is to counteract Christian mischaracterization of secular ideas. I also post to reveal areas of Christian belief that seem particularly tenuous and amenable to revision.
