Sponsor | usmjam | Dec 19, 2007 10:17am | What are your thoughts on Martin Luther's legacy? Was it successful in its attempt at reformation? How so?
As the group description implies, tis group is bible-based. Therefore the questions regarding Luther are whether or not his legacy is in-line with biblical principles, often referred to as Sola Scriptura.
For a discussion of Protestantism compared to Roman Catholic teachings, please see the Catholic-Evangelical Talk group's thread on Luther titled "Martin Luther's legacy -Current day view". Thanks. |

Martin Luther brought the word of God into the hands of the common man. This point is a very great success. I don't know where the world would be today if this was not true. For this reason, I rejoice that Martin Luther lived. We can see his legacy all over the place in that I have several copies of Scripture in my house (including Romanian). There are multiple internet Bibles, etc... Praise God for the availability of the written word in common language. |

Some reformation came from what Luther did, but more harm came from it then good. Christians through out the world now are split. The One Church Christ established is split. (From the other post from usmjam)... |

Any biblical basis for that, I wonder?

1Th 4:2 for you know what commandments we gave you through the Lord Jesus.
1Th 4:3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality;
1Th 4:4 that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor,
1Th 4:5 not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God;
1Th 4:6 that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also forewarned you and testified.
1Th 4:7 For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.
2Ti 2:19 Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: "The Lord knows those who are His," and, "Let everyone who names the name of Christ[fn3] depart from iniquity."
2Ti 2:20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor.
2Ti 2:21 Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.
2Ti 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
2Ti 2:23 But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife.
I included a little more than needed for contexts sake. My point is that each one is exhorted to maintain "his own vessel." A large degree of responsibility is placed on the individual. However, the letters to Timothy also speak to the responsibility of church leaders. |

| fireforchrist | Jan 17, 8:38pm | 2 John 9-11, Paul condemns having any fellowship with someone who does not abide by the doctrine of Christ. Someone who does not live by the teachings of Christ we are not to condone.
"Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds."
Galatians 1: 7-9. Here again is reference to essential teaching which is perverted "Let him be accursed"
"Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed."
2 John 1:9-11
"Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him. Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work."
2 Timothy 3:16.
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:"
Matthew 15:14
"Leave them; they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit."
If you set up any person or saint alive or dead as mediator between God and humanity it is a corrupt system and is contrary to the very core of the gospel. 1 Timothy 2:5, Paul states:
"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;"
1 Cor. 5:9, 11, 13
This passage says to "Expel the wicked man from among you." Obviously if it has gotten to the point that these men are in control and are in great numbers you must expel the whole lot of them and declare independence from them.
2 Corinthians 6:14-15 If the people see that they are yoked to unbelievers through a government type structure they should leave. A Shepherd should be responsible to break this unequal yoke with unbelievers.
"Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?"
2 Corinthians 6:17-18 He says to come out from them.
"Therefore come out from them
and be separate, says the Lord.
Touch no unclean thing,
and I will receive you."
"I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."
There should not be disputes over trivial matters however in matters essential to salvation or the Doctrine of Christ and as defined in the word concerning sin you must separate yourself from them. |
