My previous post got misformatted. Below is what it should have read:

248: The math is laid out below. The numbers correspond to the age at which each man (the name in parentheses) gave birth to a son (the proceeding name in parentheses):

130 (Adam) + 105 (Seth) + 90 (Enosh) + 70 (Kenan) + 60 (Mahalalel) + 162 (Jared) + 65 (Enoch) + 187 (Methuselah) + 182 (Lamech) + 500 (Noah) + 100 (Shem) + 35 (Arphaxad) + 30 (Shelah) + 34 (Eber) + 30 (Peleg) + 32 (Reu) + 30 (Serug) + 29 (Nahor) + 70 (Abraham) = 1946

There were 52 generations between Abraham and Jesus ("Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ." Matthew 1:17). Assuming for argument's sake that the average age a father begat a son to be about 25 years old, you get 52*25 = 1300. Add 2007 years to that, and you get the following simple equation:

1946 years + 1300 years + 2007 years = 5253 years = age of humanity according to the Bible

Gen 11:32 12:1,4 Ac. 7:4 (date for Abraham)

Age at C/Date after creation
1:1-31 Creation 0
5:3 Seth born when Adam, 130 130
5:6 Enos born when Seth, 105 235
5:9 Cainan born when Enos, 90 325
5:12 Mahalaleel born when Cainan, 70 395
5:15 Jared born when Mahalaleel, 65 460
5:18 Enoch born when Jared, 162 622
5:21 Methuselah born when Enoch, 65 687
5:25 Lamech born when Methuselah, 187 874
5:28 Noah born when Lamech, 182 1056
11:10 Shem born when Noah, 502 1558
7:6 Flood when Noah, 600 1656

From Genesis 11 we get:

11:10 Arphaxad born when Shem, 100 1658
11:12 Salah born when Arphad, 35 1693
11:14 Eber born when Sala 30 1723
11:16 Peleg born when Eber, 34 1758
11:18 Reu born when Peleg, 30 1787
11:20 Serug born when Reu, 32 1819
11:22 Nahor born when Serug, 30 1849
11:24 Terah born when Nahor, 29 1878
11:32, 12:4 Abraham born when Terah, 130 2008
12:4 Abraham enters Canaan, 75 2083

How does that differ from what I calculated?

you have 1946 for Abraham it does not make that much difference

Which version of the Bible are you using? My verses are from NIV. Also, the difference between my answer and yours (2083-1946= 137 years) are insignificant. There could also be slightly different answer based on how old one sets average generation time between Abraham and Jesus. Any reasonable change in these parameters would produce changes in hundreds of years, not tens of thousands of years as would be required to match the age of humanity as determined by science (~70,000 years).

257: "you have 1946 for Abraham it does not make that much difference"

I didn't see that part before entering my previous post. As you would seem to suggest, this does not resolve the contradiction between Genesis and science.

Thus, for reasons explained over the past 40 posts, anyone who believes that Genesis is the word of God must believe that humanity is tens of thousands of years younger than it actually is.

You do not have to rely on the number of generations and their length to get from Abraham to the present date.

Abraham born ...........................................2008c

Abraham enters Canaan...................................2083c

Exactly 430 years to the day Exodus.....................2513c
(Ge 12:10, Ex 12:40, Gal 3:17)
to the start of the temple 479 years....................2992c
(1 Ki 6:1)
to the division of the kingdom 37 years.................3029c
(1 kings 11:42)
To final deportation 4 years after Jerusalem fell.......3421c
390 years and a part of a year(Eze 4:4-6) =584 BC

Date for Creation 584 + 3421 - 1 = 4004 BC
The earth is 4004 + 2007 - 1= 6010 years old (from creation of Adam)

Eat~ "1946 years + 1300 years + 2007 years = 5253 years = age of humanity according to the Bible"

My dates 2008 + 1995 + 2007 = 6010

I think it is safe to say that the Bible gives a date of approximately 6000 years for humanity.
